Considerations for Pet Product Labels
There are many considerations before going into the pet product industry which are unique to pet product labeling.
For Pet Foods such as cat food, dog food or dog treats, the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA) requires that animal foods be truthfully labeled.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations require proper identification of pet product labeling.
Proper identification includes:
- Net quantity statement,
- name and place of business of the manufacturer or distributor,
- proper and ordered listing of all the ingredients based on weight.
Some states also enforce their own labeling regulations. Many of these regulations are based on a model provided by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO).*
