Marijuana / Cannabis Label Regulations

Medical marijuana sales were projected to exceed $10 billion by 2020, and the market continues to expand rapidly. With this growth, states and regulatory bodies are also quickly evolving marijuana and cannabis label regulations.

Marijuana may help combat symptoms of diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Crohn’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and arthritis. States like California, Maine, Massachusetts, and Nevada have legalized recreational use, while Arkansas, Florida, New Jersey, and North Dakota have approved medical marijuana.

However, marijuana also carries health risks and the potential for addiction. Because of this, states require strict warning labels on cannabis products.

Common Cannabis Label Warnings

Here is a list of warnings for Cannabis Label Regulations that one state requires on their commercial marijuana.

  • Habit Forming: Marijuana has intoxicating effects and may be habit-forming or addictive.
  • Impaired Abilities: Cannabis can impair concentration, coordination, and judgment. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery under the influence.
  • Health Risks: Side effect information is limited. There may be associated health risks. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not use this product.
  • Age Restriction: For adults 21 years and older. Keep out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Resale/Transfer: For medical use only. Not for resale or transfer. Illegal for non-patients to possess or consume.
  • Medical Use Only: This medical cannabis is for therapeutic use only.

Additional Requirements

  • Federal law classifies cannabis as a Schedule I controlled substance.
  • Consumers may experience delayed effects for up to two hours.
  • Manufacturers must state that the FDA has not approved or analyzed the product.
  • They must also warn consumers that the product may be unlawful outside the state of origin.
  • Labels should emphasize that consumers must keep products secured at all times.
