A panel or chart on a package of food or product that contains all the information about the nutritional facts and ingredients of the food item. This can include serving size, number of calories, grams of fat, nutrients, and list of ingredients.

What information goes on a food label?

Food labeling laws require only vitamins A and C and calcium and iron on the food label. However, added vitamins or minerals must be listed on the food label.  Also, foods making a vitamin or mineral claim must list  these vitamins or minerals.  Anything added to the existing food must be listed.

What do Food Labelling Laws require on a nutrition label?

Calories, calories from fat, fat, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrates, dietary fiber, sugars, protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, and iron.

Do ingredients on food labels have to be listed in order?

Food labeling laws require that ingredients must be listed in a specific order. Food labels must list ingredient from most to least by weight.

The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) and the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act are the Federal laws governing food products under FDA’s jurisdiction.  This is because consumers must be aware of everything in foods.

How do you read a food label?

Look at calories per serving and how many servings you are really eating to calculate calories and nutrition. If you double the servings you eat, you double the calories and any nutrients included in the product. There are also specific ingredients and nutrients listed on the label that give further information into what is in the food product.
