Food Labeling Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

food-labelsWhat is a food label?

A food label is a panel or chart on a food package that contains all the nutritional information and ingredients of the food item. Essentially, it includes serving size, number of calories, grams of fat, nutrients, and a list of ingredients.

What information goes on a food label?

Food labeling laws require manufacturers to list certain vitamins and minerals, specifically vitamins A, C, calcium, and iron, on the food label. Additionally, manufacturers must include any added vitamins or minerals. Foods that make a claim about a specific vitamin or mineral must also list these on the label. Finally, anything added to the existing food must be listed.

What do Food Labelling Laws require on a nutrition label?

Nutrition labels are required to list the following: Calories, Calories from Fat, Total Fat, Saturated Fat, Trans Fat, Cholesterol, Sodium, Carbohydrates, Dietary Fiber, Sugars, Protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Calcium, and Iron.

Do ingredients on food labels have to be listed in order?

Yes, food labeling laws require that manufacturers list ingredients in a specific order. Specifically, they must list ingredients from most to least by weight.

Are food labels required by law?

Yes. The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) and the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act govern food products under the FDA’s jurisdiction. These regulations ensure consumers know exactly what is in the foods they consume.

How do you read a food label?

To read a food label, first, check the calories per serving and the number of servings you are actually eating to calculate total calories and nutrients. For example, if you double the number of servings, you also double the calories and nutrients. Ingredient and nutrient listings also provide important details about the food product.
